Watch Shane Kinsman as director on the set of his movie My Intuition—which he also wrote and is producing—and be prepared for an enigma. There is his focus: “Okay guys, we want this type of shot so lights can go there and the camera here;” and there is his directorial leadership: “When your character enters through the door, play your emotion like this as you confront what you see;” and there is the pressure of high expectation: “Sorry guys, we have to reset and do the take again. I don’t want to compromise, I want it to be perfect.” BUT--and this is the strange part when it comes to filmmaking--with Shane as director there is no magnified ego. The cast and crew are regular witnesses to his flexibility. “When you give actors creative freedom to bring themselves into the character,” explains Shane, “you open up doorways.” Along with this liberalism, he brings to the set an ethic of hard work, artistic urgency, and the tension of bringing together a mixed group of people who are meant to shape his vision—and yet it’s all infused with his inherent sense of fun and selflessness. Shane not only creates films, but builds the tight staff which he knows allows the magic to really flow. The story of My Intuition was shaped from Shane’s fascination with nighttime dreams and intuition, and their connection to the physical world. Inspired by the genre of film noir, Shane strives to resurrect the influence of what he terms the founding fathers (Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles), lamenting that these geniuses, who made their lasting creations on equipment now considered primitive, are too-often forgotten today. Shying-away from CGI (computer generated imagery) effects, one of Shane’s technical talents is in framing a great shot. “I love the hard shadows, dark scenes, the under-exposed lighting.” Paired with his affinity for displaying the variances of human nature and creating a venue where, as he puts it: “the characters act out of desperation, where one situation leads to a response that creates another situation,” Shane crafts a mood which runs the movie. He notes that he’s fortunate not to personally know any of the type of primally-reactive characters that appear in his script. Shane and his wife Deborah live on Cape Cod, MA, (outside Boston) with their young twins Marissa and Anthony, the namesakes to Maran Films. Having been involved with acting for many years—one movie in which he appeared was 1996’s The Mouse, starring John Savage, Rip Torn,—Shane worked in the ‘90’s directing for entities such as the US Airforce, Warner Bros. and Montel Williams.
Having children caused a hiatus in Shane’s film work, yet it was also his kids who re-involved him in the business; Marissa is a professional model (following in her mother’s footsteps) and signed by Product Model Management (NYC) One of New York Cities big three modeling agency. Anthony works as an actor (see more information on Anthony below). In which he recently wrapped his first feature film. Shane hopes one day to be going to their runway debuts, movie premieres, or witnessing whatever else has made them happy. “Anyone who loves their kids sets opportunities that they themselves didn’t have,” says Shane. Having grown up with parents who are supportive of his own artistic endeavors—he has been a musician from a young age, starting with piano and moving into playing “any and all” instruments—he speaks from experience. Shane has also written the film A Change in Times, in which he will be starring. Production begins immediately after the wrap of My Intuition. For all of this to happen independently, he just keeps “pushing and pushing and pushing.” The biggest high he gets from shooting a film? “I love a perfect take,” says Shane. He’s already gotten many. One can only hope that Hitchcock and Welles are watching. |
